Clearwater Police Chief to Retire

Clearwater Police chief-kleinChief Sid Klein is retiring after 28 years in the department.

Klein began his career with the Clearwater Police Department in 1981.

“We’ve been able to make some good things happen in this community,” he said. “It’s a community where people feel safe. And I’m very comfortable going out into retirement with that feeling.”

Klein is known as the man behind many projects in Clearwater, which include a community policing program that reached out to Clearwater’s growing Hispanic population.

His last day is January 29th.

1982 – Present

Sid Klein was born in Brooklyn, New York on September 7, 1941.After attending schools in Miami, Florida, he served in the United States Navy from June 1959 to September 1962.He began his law enforcement career with the Dade County Public Safety Department as a deputy sheriff in March 1963.In 1966, he was assigned to Internal Affairs where he worked in a special investigative unit called the “Sheriff’s Squad” which reported directly to Sheriff E. Wilson Purdy on investigations of organized crime and corruption.Also, in this capacity, he served as a special investigator for the Dade County Grand Jury.In 1968, he was assigned as an undercover narcotics agent in the Organized Crime Bureau
In May 1970, he became one of the original officers of the newly formed Lakewood (Colorado) Department of Public Safety.  In 1970, he was named “Police Agent of the Year”; an award which he repeated in 1971.  Klein was promoted to Sergeant in June 1971 and to Captain in July 1971, where he served as a Patrol Watch Commander.  In June 1972, he assumed the responsibility of the Captain of the Investigation Division, and from September 1973 to May 1978, he served as the Captain of the Intelligence Division.  In 1978, he was promoted to Assistant Director of the Lakewood Department of Public Safety.

Sid Klein was appointed Chief of Police of the Clearwater Police Department on January 1, 1981, after he was chosen over 200 other candidates for the position.  As Chief of Police, he has instituted numerous programs and procedures in an effort to make the Clearwater Police Department a more efficient, professional, and responsive law enforcement agency.
