Clearwater police cruisers crashed after a pursuit.

Clearwater police cruisers crashed after a pursuit.

According to the Clearwater Police Department, an officer attempted to make a traffic stop on a Chevy Impala at Nicholson Street and north Jefferson Avenue at 10:11 p.m.

The vehicle then backed into the police cruiser and fled, which is what initiated the pursuit.

Officers pursued the Impala through Clearwater on Keene Road and into Largo at speeds that reached 100 miles per hour.

Just before calling off the pursuit, an officer attempted to push his cruiser into the Chevy in an attempt to spin the car out of control.

Instead, the cruiser hit another police vehicle and the Chevy managed to get away. The crash happened near the intersection of Starkey Road and East Bay Drive.

Two other cars sustained minor damage but there were no injuries.

Officials said the driver of the Impala could face aggravated assault with a motor vehicle charges if apprehended.

Meanwhile, the Clearwater Police Department expects to release more information on this case later today.
