rescued five men from their sinking boat in the Gulf Tuesday afternoon.

The Coast Guard got the mayday call about 10 a.m. The boat began taking on water 31 miles west of Anclote Key.

“When we got (to the boat) it was 80 to 90 percent swamped,” said aircraft commander Todd Farrel. “So, they were basically sitting in water.”

The Coast Guard dispatched a helicopter and a boat crew that happened to be training in the vicinity of the sinking vessel.

“Before we arrived on scene the gentlemen on the boat set off a flare,” Farrel said.

The Coast Guard says the flare and several other factors helped the boaters get rescued quickly. One by one the boaters were hoisted out of the water and into a helicopter.

“The guys in the boat had radios,” Farrel said. “They were wearing (life jackets). They had flames that helped (us) locate them.”

No one was injured.

The Coast Guard recommends boaters file a float plan with a family member or friend. They should also have emergency equipment on board.
