I’m surprised this don’t happen more often. I drive a lot around Pinellas county, and when it’s raining with lighting striking all around. People are running across streets with a lighting rod (umbrella) high above their heads.  I don’t care how big of a hurry you are in. Stay inside until lighting stop. At least put the umbrella away and get wet. Better wet than dead.

A lightning strike came dangerously close to a Pinellas County man Sunday evening.

According to Pinellas County Fire Rescue, a man suffered a “secondary shock’ when lightning hit near where he was walking in the parking lot of a Panera Bread restaurant in Largo.

The incident happened at 6:18 p.m. when the man was walking across the parking lot while holding an umbrella.

While not a direct strike, the incident was still enough to send the man to Largo Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.

The man is expected to be okay but his condition has not been released.
